Privacy Policy

Study Music Theory ("we", "the app", "the service") is a gamified revision tool for physiotherapy students covering musculoskeletal conditions. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and what rights you have.

Who runs this

What we collect

We collect the minimum data needed to run the app:

• Account data (only if you sign in): your Google account display name, email address, and profile photo URL, passed to us by Google Sign-In via Firebase Authentication. We also store a unique user ID generated by Firebase.
• Progress data: lessons completed, XP, streak, hearts, mastery quiz streaks, SRS (spaced repetition) state. If you sign in, we mirror your XP, weekly XP, streak, and display name to Firebase Firestore so you appear on the leaderboard. If you do not sign in, all progress stays on your device only.
• Device data: we do not collect device identifiers, IP addresses, or telemetry beyond what Firebase Authentication uses internally for anti-abuse.
• No analytics: Study Music Theory does not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, advertising trackers, or any third-party analytics service.

How we use it

• To save your progress across devices (if signed in)
• To display a leaderboard ranking users by weekly XP
• To personalise your experience within the app
• We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers. We do not profile users for marketing. We do not email you unless you have emailed us first.

Where your data lives

Authentication and progress sync are handled by Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore), operated by Google LLC. Data is stored in Google's cloud infrastructure. Firebase's own privacy practices are documented at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

Your data stored locally

Most of your progress lives in your device's browser localStorage (or, in the mobile app, the equivalent native storage). This includes:

• XP, hearts, streak, daily XP counters
• SRS (spaced repetition) state per lesson
• Mastery quiz streaks per question
• Your chosen display name
• Tooltip "seen" flags and simplify-mode preference

Clearing your browser storage, reinstalling the app, or using a different device will reset this local data unless you are signed in (in which case we can partially restore XP and streak from the Firestore mirror).

Cookies

Study Music Theory does not set tracking cookies. Firebase Authentication uses secure session cookies internally to keep you signed in. No advertising cookies are set.

Children

Study Music Theory is intended for adults studying physiotherapy (typically 18+). It is not directed at children. If you believe a child under 13 (or 16 in the UK/EU) has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights (UK GDPR)

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your account and associated data at any time (see below)
• Object to processing
• Data portability — request a copy of your data in a machine-readable format
• Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if you believe your rights have been violated: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint

Deleting your account

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time. See the account deletion page for step-by-step instructions. Deletion removes your Firestore leaderboard entry, your Firebase Authentication record, and all local data. This is immediate and irreversible.

Changes to this policy

If we materially change this policy, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes we will show a notice in the app the next time you open it.
